"Waking Sleeping Beauty" reminds me of a British documentary I saw called "Disney: The Fairy Tale Years" which also covered the Disney revival as well as the original films. Although it concentrated more on the movies. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

Can you please make the show downloadable again for people NOT using itunes.

Rather than having to listen to the embedded version on your site I'll stop listening altogether if I can't download and listen where I'd like.

Patrick: A iTunes-button is a great idea. We will do that!

Michael: The technical answer: We used to just link to the mp3 on our wordpress blog, and leave the RSS-stream to feedburner, but now I use a wordpress-plugin that does everything for us (with far less non-standard html-problems.

I'm glad you could review Cat's Don't Dance. Despite it's faults it's still one of the few movies I come back to time and time again for inspiration. I love the animation and spirited singing and dancing. It represents a parallel world of gorgeous 2D animation I wish i could have been a part of.

There's some footage from Rescuers used in Rescuers 2(where they fly off from the rooftop) and the difference in styles really stands out. The scene from the first film
appears hand drawn while the rest of the movie appears to have been computer coloured.

Heavy Metal was really developed from the Heavy Metal magazine which became known
for it's beautiful illustrations. Unfortunately, because all the attention was
put into the artwork, absolute no attention went into the stories. It did make an
impact at the time because just about all the other animated movies produced at
the time were Disney movies.

Heavy Metal 2000 is a much different movie. HM2K has a complete SF storyline and
is reminiscent of Starchaser:Legend of Orin. There's a lot of people who didn't like
MH2K as much because it differed so much from the first film, but I found the second
film better.

Other ensemble animated movies worth looking for are Robot Carnival and the more
recent Genius Party. Both have been produced in Japan.

Aandersen is well known around the world, just about as well known as the Grimm's Brothers. There was an American movie made years ago about him which was really popular, but his stories have been used as source material for many movies.

It's great to hear that there's another version of Snow Queen coming out. It will be interesting to see what Disney does with it. There's been many animated and live action versions, including an animated TV series from Japan.

Grinch was never made as a movie; it was made as a TV special (as with other Dr. Suess specials) which is why it's 25 minutes long. Like the Charlie Brown special, it has been standard fair for just about every year since it was made.

Some of Rankin Bass's work can be hard to find, although the recent the WB releases have made it easier. Much of the work had fallen into public domain and could often be found on
cheap children's videotapes and sometimes DVDs (like the dollar store stuff). Many of those cheap children's DVDs often feature classic animation that's fallen into PD. Some real gems can be found if you're willing to look. (Although I don't know how common they are over there.)

Hey! I love South Park too. Watch it as often as I can, but the movie fell a bit short for us.
I would have rated it higher, looking back today, but what can you do :)

I really love South Park because despite the vulgar side of the series, it still raises a moral taboo subjects of society with much derision! ^ ^

You're covering Rankin Bass' Rudolf and you haven't heard of their Jack Frost? Admittedly it's not as well known as Rudolf but it's worth looking up. The Rankin Bass specials have been mainstays on North American TV.

There's a clip of Jack Frost on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AvjxNR1gd8

There's a number of cheap releases about, mostly on VHS. But some of them have alot of video problems. It seems most of Rankin Bass' catalogue fell into public domain, at least for a while, but WB seems to have picked up the masters.

Although Rankin Bass has been best known for their stop motion, I've always been a fan of their hand-drawn animation.

There's more info at: http://www.rankinbass.com/

The "Best Animated Film" category was created because there really was no category
for feature length animation and practically no chance at one ever winning. Instead they would tend to win the "Best Song" as a consolation. Beauty And The Beast is the only film to ever get a Best Picture nomination but didn't win.

I've been listening through past episodes and your reviews of various animated movies.
I think it's important to consider the times in which the films were made and the
resources available to the animators of the time. Not everyone has a Disney budget.

An American Tail was a great movie and it showed that you didn't have to be Disney
to release a major animated film. It was the first animated film (that I know of)
to beat a Disney film at the box-office. Before that Disney was practically the only
company to release animated films, and they milked them to death with re-releases.
The success of An American Tail gave other studios the courage to get into animation.
Prior to that time, we might get one new animated film, usually from Disney, once every
couple years. Now it seems there's a new animated film (although mostly CG) every month.

I recall seeing The Three Caballeros at the theater. It came out before music videos
and wasn't that strange when you look at some of the other animation from Disney at that time.

Cars was a movie filled with Americana that hearkened back to the glory days of
Route 66. The whole idea of the town being cut off from the world after the
interstate road is based on the towns and businesses that were destroyed when
such a road was built to replace Route 66. A few towns and businesses have managed
to survive, but a great deal was lost. Watching the film without knowing about
Route 66 is like watching Rover Dangerfield without knowing who Rodney Dangerfield was.

Seems like we are on the same page when it comes to this movie.
Costume drama with a nerve.

I will have a look at the sidebar-problem. Thanks for pointing it out!

I liked Prince of Egypt, although I can't say it would be for everyone.
It was made for an audience familiar with story, let alone one familiar with
the Charlton Heston movie, "The Ten Commandments" which gets annual play each year.

It was also one of Dreamwork's first animated films and it's success led to further
animated films. This film came out at a time when practically the only movie
animation came from either Disney or Bluth. It was nice to see somebody new getting
into the game. Unfortunately, they didn't continue with the 2D animation.

According to Wikipedia, the film made over $100 million in the US and over
$200 million worldwide. It outperformed ANTZ, although ANTZ was cheaper to make.

The story does get slow and I can't say I'd watch it often, but the look makes
it one that deserves to be seen at least once.

I wasn't expecting a lot from Bolt so when I saw it I was really pleased. I already knew it looked great... but the story was respectable and funny too. Not the best but totally decent..

Shrek may have been swamped in similar styles of movies and sequels since it came out but that's just a sign of how influential it was. It was a big turning point for animation and signified the beginning of a medium that was far less concerned about taking the mickey out of itself.

Aladdin kicks the Black Cauldron's butt!

Can you publish the list you've put together so far?

I'm watching old movies too and learning a lot. I watched Delgo and Donkey Xote recently learning a lot about what's not working. I found the Delgo audio commentary very enlightening as it makes it clear why some things just didn't have a chance. Thanks for the linkage guys. Keep up the good work.

Thank you Ratul. We love feedback.
Good feedback is even better.

And thank you for noticing me about the corrupt file. For some reason, I've had trouble uploading some of the mp3-files. No idea why.
I'll try and fix this A.S.A.P (The complete podcast is uploading right now)
